Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bears down Aces in Conway

CONWAY, Ark. – An incisive Central Arkansas counterattack and a penalty proved the difference on Tuesday night as the University of Evansville men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the host Bears at Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.

"It's always a scrappy match for us when we come down here," UE head coach Marshall Ray said. "We had a few spurts where things worked, and we have to be able to have more intensity in some of these games. Tonight it wasn't just about soccer. It was a more physical game, and we have to be able to match that. We still created opportunities and chances, and we kept fighting until the end."

With the loss, the Aces dropped to 6-6-1 on the season, including a 2-2-0 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. UCA, on the other hand, improved to 3-7-1 and 1-3-0, respectively.

After a fairly even first half, the Bears drew first blood with a Niklas Brodacki strike in the 63rd minute. It was the seventh goal of the season for the Swede, and he was played through the middle by the duo of Wes Carson and Daltyn Knutson.

Pepe San Roman doubled the UCA advantage four minutes later after being awarded a kick from the penalty spot.

The Aces would push forward for much of the final 20 minutes, but they were not able to break down the Bear defense. It's the second time this season that UE was shutout.

"A game can turn on one play here or there, and tonight we weren't sharp enough," Ray said. "We're going to get back and go to work. We have 90 minutes on Saturday to rebound and regroup."

UE will return to action later this week when league-leading Loyola will pay a visit to Arad McCutchan Stadium on Saturday evening. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m., and there will be a special homecoming weekend fireworks show after the match.

NOTES: The Aces were also shutout in their last MVC match, falling 1-0 to Missouri State earlier this month … UE is 7-2-1 all-time against Central Arkansas … Tuesday marked just the second time in the 10-match series that the Bears have scored … UCA is the only school from the state of Arkansas that the Aces have played.
