Ypsilanti, Michigan – Men's Swimming and Diving opened the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships tonight in Ypsilanti.
"It was a good first night," Head Coach Rickey Perkins said. "We were a little nervous but we swam well; two seventh places, but the times were nice. We haven't gone under 7:00 in the 800 Free Relay in probably ten years, so we should be proud of that. Tomorrow we'll relax and be ready to go, a lot of individual events to do well in."
The Aces opened the night with the 200 Medley Relay. Sophomore Daniel O'Brien, Senior Troy Burger, Freshman Matt Duke, and Junior Matt Childress teamed up for a seventh place performance with a time of 1:32.39.
O'Brien continued his evening with the 800 Freestyle Relay along with Senior Ethan O'Rourke, Freshman Jared Sutphin, and Senior Cameron Wickes. The four earned another seventh place finish at 6:55.21. The seven-minute mark has not been broken since before 2003.
The Aces currently sit at seventh place with 48 points, only just behind Ball State with 52 points. Leading the pack are Eastern Michigan with 72 points, Buffalo with 70, and Missouri State with 68.
A full day of competition is ahead of the Aces tomorrow with the 500 Freestyle, 200 IM, 50 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 1-Meter Diving. Prelims begin at 11am ET, and finals begin at 7pm ET.
