Ypsilanti, Michigan – The University of Evansville men's swimming continued their success with further improvements in Friday's competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
"Fantastic day," said Head Coach Rickey Perkins. "A lot of lifetime bests again today. We had four guys make it to B Finals. All of them improved. I am very proud of this team. They have fought themselves back into the meet. Tomorrow is a big day; we will fight, fight, fight with all our might."
Tonight in the finals session, Sophomore Dan O'Brien took to the lanes in the 100 Butterfly. Seeded 12
th place, he took 11
th, clocking in at 49.30, a .19 improvement from the morning's preliminary round.
Senior Troy Burger excelled in the 100 Breastroke this evening. He was seeded 14
th after prelims and took it a few steps further to end in 11
th. His time of 56.44 was a half second drop from his morning time.
Next up for the Purple Aces was Senior Ethan O'Rourke in the 100 Backstroke, earning 13
th place with a 50.44. His morning time of 50. 34 was a season best.
Freshman diver Cory Barnes competed in the 3-Meter B-Final seeded 16
th place. He scored a 255.40, and his place will be made official upon the completion of the event in tomorrow's A-Final.
The men closed the night's competition with the 400 Medley Relay. The combination of O'Rourke, Burger, O'Brien, and Sophomore Everett Plocek were able to surpass Ball State to take 6
th place, touching in at 3:23.15.
In addition to the success of the evening, the men performed well in the preliminaries. Every single race the Aces took part in this morning resulted in a season or career best time.
These efforts have moved Evansville up in the rankings to 6
th with 116 points, ahead of Ball State's 112. Eastern Michigan and Missouri State lead the pack with 528 and 439 points respectively.
The final day of competition takes place tomorrow with the 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breastroke, 200 Butterfly, 1650 Freestyle, and 400 Freestyle Relay. To follow the Aces with live stats, visit the Mid-American Conference at mac-sports.com
