While Mark Anthony Gonzalez has made waves in the professional realm this summer, he isn't the only member of last year's University of Evansville men's soccer team to shine as returners Ian McGrath, Mike Matic and Arlick Ntabana each impressed on the amateur level as well.
Gonzalez, who signed with Sporting KC affiliate Swope Park Rangers earlier this year, has starred for the USL outfit, leading the team with five goals and two assists. After a slow start to the season due to an injury, the Canadian led the league with five goals in the month of June. For the season, he's played in 15 matches, starting nine, and he's helped the team to a 6-8-4 mark in its first-ever competitive season.
Gonzalez is far from the only UE connection with SPR as former Aces standout Alec Dufty joined the coaching staff earlier this year and former head coach Mike Jacobs is a member of Sporting KC's technical staff.
Meanwhile, McGrath carved out a spot for himself in another corner of the country, starring for FC Buffalo in the NPSL. McGrath, who had earned an All-Missouri Valley designation in each of his first two campaigns in the Purple and White, was named the FC Buffalo Supporters' Choice Player of the Year. The New Lenox, Ill., native finished second on the team with three goals and one assist while helping the team to a third place finish in the NPSL Midwest Region with a 5-2-3 overall record.
Matic and Ntabana, who each play with Sigma FC in Ontario's League 1, have helped their squad to the top of the league table with a 10-3-1 mark. Matic has seen action in seven games, scoring twice, and Ntabana has appeared in six.
In addition to the recent UE standouts, Marc Burch is currently enjoying is 11th season in MLS. The Cincinnati native has started 13 matches for the league-leading Colorado Rapids, teaming up with former U.S. Men's National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard to help post what is easily the best defensive record in the league. The Rapids have conceded just 13 times n 19 contests, five goals fewer than any other team.
Meanwhile, former national teamer Troy Perkins, who retired from MLS with the 10th most appearances in league history in 2015, is currently in his first season as a goalkeeping coach for S2, which is the Seattle Sounders FC affiliate in USL.
Elsewhere, Paul Nevin has taken on a coaching role with Brighton and Hove Albion, which competes in the Championship in England, and David Weir, who enjoyed a lengthy professional career that included a trip to the 1998 World Cup, recently agreed to an extension as the assistant manager for Rangers FC in Scotland.
The UE men's soccer program will begin preparations for the 2016 season next month.
