MARTIN, Tenn. – A second-half surge from the hosts proved too much for the University of Evansville women's soccer team as the Purple Aces dropped a 2-0 decision to UT Martin at Skyhawk Field on Tuesday night.
"It was a tale of two halves for us," UE head coach Krista McKendree said. "After the first 10 minutes, we started to create some good chances, and the play was good. We were able to take control of the match a little bit. But in the second half, we never really found the rhythm that we needed."
The Aces (1-7-1) certainly appeared most likely to score in the opening stanza as Bronwyn Boswell linked up with both Montana Portenier and Sara Osinski within a five-minute span late in the first half to generate the first bona fide scoring chances for UE. Portenier may have had the best opportunity as she nearly caught UTM goalkeeper Maya Jamison off her line a few minutes before the half expired.
"I think we have to find our confidence a little bit," McKendree explained. "We have to see the ball go into the back of the net a few times. We're creating the chances, but we need to put them away. Hopefully we can find that confidence and composure going forward with the rest of the season.
It would be the Skyhawks (3-4-0) who would turn back the pressure in the second half, beginning with a build-up through Sophia Soros, who would find a charging Katelyn Colvin inside the box, and she hammered it home for the opening tally in the 56
th minute.
Following a few impressive saves from Whitney Biggs, who'd end the game with a season-best 10 stops, Saphyra Coombs-James doubled the advantage with a header in the 69
th minute.
UE will return to action later this week with a trip to IUPUI on Friday.
NOTES: UE is 2-4-1 all-time against UT Martin, and Tuesday marked the sixth time that the two schools have squared off since 2010 … The two sides first met in a 7-0 UE win on Sept. 2, 2001, and they wouldn't meet again until a 2-0 Skyhawk win on Sept. 10, 2010 … Last season, UTM mounted a second-half comeback to beat UE 3-2 in Evansville.
