Women’s Soccer drops showdown with Butler

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A first-half Bulldog flurry proved decisive on Sunday afternoon as the University of Evansville women's soccer team fell 4-0 to visiting Butler at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

The Bulldogs (7-2-1) came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, opening the game's scoring with a 26th minute breakaway goal by Paige Monaghan, and three minutes later, Halle Stelbasky doubled the advantage before Serina Kashimoto rounded out an impressive first half with a 39th-minute strike to make it 3-0.

In all, the Aces (1-9-1) were out-shot 9-1 by the visitors in the opening 45 minutes, but the team would start to grow into the game in the second stanza, firing off 11 shots and enjoying a spell of possession in the Butler half of the field.

"We have to try and build on the good things that we were able to do in the second half, and we need to find a way to try and correct the things that led to goals," UE head coach Krista McKendree said. "We've just not been solid defensively over the last few games. We did a lot better in the second half, and we need to focus on playing more like that."

However, it would be Butler once again that found the back of the net in the second half as Breeann Pempek made it 4-0 with an 88th-minute counterattack.

Sunday's match also served as an opportunity to honor the 2016 senior class, many of which played an integral role in leading the Aces to a conference tournament championship last year. All seven seniors on this year's team were recognized in a special pre-match ceremony on the field.

The Aces will return to action next weekend when the team opens up Missouri Valley Conference play with a trip to Drake.

NOTES: UE is 27-28-6 all-time against Indiana schools, including a 2-6-1 record against Butler … This season marks the third consecutive season that UE has taken on Butler … The series between the schools began in 1993, which was the first season that UE sponsored women's soccer, but it would go dormant following the 1998 meeting until a 1-0 Aces win on Sept. 5, 2014 … With 19 career goals, Boswell is one goal away from moving into a tie for eighth all-time in the UE history books.
