MARTIN, Tenn. – UT Martin scored four runs over their final three innings on Tuesday night, rallying from behind to pick up a 9-8 victory over the University of Evansville baseball team at Skyhawk Park.
The Aces (13-23) led twice in the contest, but after taking an 8-5 lead into the seventh inning stretch, UTM (13-20) pushed across a pair in the bottom half of the frame before adding a run apiece in the eighth and ninth innings. Connor Aube played the role of hero for the Skyhawks, singling down the left-field line to bring the game to an end with one out in the final stanza.
Aube ended the game 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs batted in, and Ryan Helgren finished 3-for-5 as the Skyhawks out-hit the Aces 16-11 in the contest.
"We weren't good enough in winning time," UE head coach Wes Carroll said. "Seventh, eighth and ninth inning. We didn't do what we needed to do on defense, on the mound or at the plate to close out the game. It has hurt us all year."
The loss put an end to a three-game winning streak for the Aces and it capped a four-game road swing.
UE relief pitcher Brandon Gomer was pegged with the loss after giving up two runs over the final 2.1 innings. He fell to 1-2 on the year.
UE took an early lead in the contest with a Travis Tokarek two-run double off the wall in the top of the first, but the advantage proved short-lived as singles from Daniel Kerwin and Keylen Steen leveled the affair an inning later. The Aces nearly got out of the inning, but an error on the would-be third out paved the way for two more Skyhawk scores off hits from Aube and Josh Hauser.
The Aces grabbed the lead back in the third with a two-run blast by Trey Hair. It marked his team-leading sixth home run of the season, and a Brendan Krob homer in the fourth highlighted a three-run fourth to make it 7-4.
Hair finished the game 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which is the longest for a UE player this season. Andrew Tanous and Craig Shepherd also enjoyed two-hit outings, and pitcher Alex Weigand surrendered five runs (three earned) over the first six innings on the mound.
Each team would trade a score before a bases-loaded walk and fielder's choice cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh. An inning later, a Helgren double plated another to make it 8-8 and set the stage for the decisive ninth.
UE will return to Charles H. Braun Stadium this weekend for a three-game set with Northern Illinois.
