EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Following strong athletic seasons, a pair of University of Evansville men's soccer student-athletes have been recognized for their efforts on the pitch and in the classroom.

Junior defender Simon Waever was named to the Missouri Valley Conference's scholar-athlete first team, while junior midfielder Jesse Stafford-Lacey was named to the scholar-athlete honorable mention team.

Waever garners the honor after being named first-team all-MVC, all-MVC Championship team, and Google Cloud Academic All-District over the last two weeks. The Holte, Denmark native recorded a team-best seven assists on the season, while excelling in the classroom where he holds a 4.00 GPA in management. The honor is the second-straight for Weaver who was also named to the scholar-athlete first team in 2017.

The accolade is the first for Stafford-Lacey after earning the 2018 Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award this year. On the pitch, Stafford-Lacey finished tied for most goals on the team with three, while adding a pair of assists in his junior campaign. Stafford-Lacey received second-team all-MVC honors for his performance along with being named MVC Offensive Player of the Week on November 6 and MVC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week on September 5. A native of Kerry, Ireland, Stafford-Lacey holds a 3.79 GPA in sport communication.

The criteria for the all-MVC honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
