Aces student-athletes experiencing World Cup across the world

As the world comes together to celebrate the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia, a number of University of Evansville men's soccer student-athletes are experiencing it from unique perspectives.

The student-athletes whose World Cup experiences will be profiled include Denmark natives Frederik Reimer and Simon Waever, Sweden natives Johan Helander and Filip Johansson, and Panama native Luis Rojas.

Over the next month, these student-athletes will be providing their interesting perspectives through this blog showing how they and those around them are celebrating the World Cup.

June 28, 2018 - The group stage is complete and two of the three nations represented by Evansville men's soccer student-athletes are advancing to the knockout round of the World Cup.

On Monday, Denmark natives Frederik Reimer and Simon Waever watched as their home country moved on to the round of 16 with a second-place finish in Group C.

Johan Helander and Filip Johansson's Swedish side jumped from third place in Group F to win the group with a 3-0 victory over Mexico on Wednesday.

Despite not advancing to the knockout round, Panama native Luis Rojas witnessed plenty of national pride in his home country as Panama enjoyed its first-ever trip to the World Cup.

June 18, 2018 - As the first set of group matches comes to a close, members of the University of Evansville men's soccer team have taken in the World Cup matches from locations across the globe.

Freshman Johan Helander and sophomore Filip Johansson took in their native country Sweden's match from home as Sweden captured a 1-0 victory. Helander's brother Filip plays on the Swedish national team.

Denmark natives Frederik Reimer and Simon Waever enjoyed their home country's 1-0 triumph over Peru on Saturday. Waever took in the match from Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark, joining a large crowd for a watch party.
