Full MVC Release

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - As the Purple Aces' exhibition opener nears, a member of the University of Evansville men's soccer team has received recognition.

Aces' junior defender Simon Waever has been named Preseason all-Missouri Valley Conference it was announced in a release by the conference office on Thursday morning.

"It's always nice to know, but its not what we are most focused on," said Waever on the honor. "Its always nice to get some recognition, but that's for last season and what matters now is what we do this season and what I do as an individual, but mostly what we do as a team."

Waever returns for his third season in purple and white following a successful 2017 campaign. A season ago, the Holte, Denmark native scored a goal and recorded an assist while anchoring the Purple Aces backline, starting 19 matches for Evansville. Waever's one goal was an important one as the junior scored in overtime in the Aces' regular season-finale against Loyola to secure an opening round bye for Evansville in the 2017 MVC Tournament.

For his efforts in 2017, Waever earned first-team all-MVC honors making him and Ace alum Ian McGrath the 26th and 27th first-team all-MVC honorees in Evansville men's soccer history.

"Its a credit to the work he's put in the last two years," remarked Aces head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "There's no question he's one of the better defenders in our conference, but also going forward he can cause havoc for the other team. I think its a credit that he's earned, but I'm sure if you ask him he's not really worried about that. he's trying to focus on what we're doing as a group."

Evansville begins competition with a pair of exhibition this weekend, opening on the road at Louisville on Saturday followed by a match against Bellarmine at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Sunday.
