Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Facing its second ranked opponent of the season, the University of Evansville men's soccer team dropped a match to No. 2 Indiana, 5-0, on Friday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
The match was watched by 1,683 fans, the most to watch a match at Arad McCutchan Stadium since Evansville played No. 2 Indiana on October 29, 2014.
"We played against a good team that finished the chances. I think if you look at the stats for the first half, it's probably not indicative of the score," said Aces' men's soccer head coach Marshall Ray. "We had that chance when it was 1-0, got in behind to make it 1-1 and that probably changed the complexion of the game a little bit. They were dangerous on the break. I thought there were times where we had pretty good possession of the ball and moved it around and unbalanced them and created some opportunities, but we've got to be better in the boxes. I think we've talked about that a lot. We've got to finish plays. So you've got to be hungry in there to create plays on both ends of the field and tonight we didn't do that."
Over the first 10 minutes of the match, much of the possession was controlled in the midfield as neither side recorded a shot. Indiana struck first in the 13th minute as the ball was played into the box to Andrew Gutman, who clipped the ball in for the Hoosiers' opening goal. In the 23rd minute, the Purple Aces saw their first chance as junior Simon Waever curled a ball into the 18 that sophomore Filip Johansson found. Johansson quickly flicked the ball towards goal, but it missed high of the crossbar. Following the Evansville opportunity, IU found its second and third goals in the 29th minute to open a 3-0 lead. Just before the end of the first half, the Hoosiers scored their fourth on a shot by AJ Palazzolo.

After each team tallied a shot in the first 15 minutes of the second half, Evansville saw itself with another opportunity as Waever's shot was saved by Indiana goalkeeper Trey Muse in the 65th minute. To close the scoring, Indiana scored in the 74th minute as Griffin Dorsey scored off an assist from Gutman. The final moments of the match four shots by the Aces including a pair that were on-goal, but both were saved as the Hoosiers grabbed the 5-0 win.
Four different Aces recorded two shots in the match to lead Evansville, as junior Ben Weber and freshman Logan Muck each put one of their two shots on-goal. Between the posts for Evansville, junior Frederik Reimer spent nearly 69 minute in goal, making six saves and allowing four goals in the match, while Greg Niven played 21 minutes in goal, recording a save and allowing one goal.
"It's great to have a crowd. I don't think there's any question about it. We appreciate having people in the stands and supporting us. Thanks to our community for coming out to support us and also support Indiana men's soccer, it's a great team, and it's a great rivalry that we've got to do our part to get back to and I think that we can and I think we're moving forward with that. It's just always nice to have those types of games here. Butler will be here soon, Missouri State's going to be a good atmosphere. We need our fans to come out and support us in those games like they did for Grand Canyon and tonight because it makes a difference."
Evansville's three-match homestand continues on Saturday, September 29 when the Aces host Missouri State in UE's Missouri Valley Conference opener at 5 p.m. at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
