EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After putting together one of his best performances of the season, University of Evansville junior Stanley Chepchieng has been named Missouri Valley Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, it was announced in a release by the conference office on Tuesday.
At the Austin Peay Cross Country Festival on Saturday morning, Chepchieng earned a second-place finish, setting a new PR in the four-mile event. Chepchieng's time of 19:29.365 was a nearly two-and-a-half minute improvement over his previous PR set at the Austin Peay Cross Country Festival in 2016. The second-place finish is the third of the season for the junior who opened 2018 with a 21st-place finish at the Walt Crawford Open before recording a 14th-place finish at the UAH Chargers Open.
Chepchieng is the first Purple Aces' men's runner to garner weekly MVC honors since Cody Stein received the honor on September 4, 2012. Since 2010, Evansville has earned three MVC athlete of the week honors, including Josh Witters who earned the honor on September 15, 2010. The honor represents the second for Evansville's cross country teams this season as women's cross country runner Anna Lowry was recognized September 11 for her performance at the UAH Chargers Open.
After a week off, the Aces return to action on October 6 when they travel to Owensboro, Ky. to compete in the Fast Cats Classic.
