EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After a successful outing at the Walt Crawford Open a week ago, the University of Evansville men's and women's cross country teams travel to Huntsville, Ala. to compete in the UAH Chargers Open.
"This course is quite a bit tougher than EIU's course. We're looking for consistency," said Aces' men's and women's cross country head coach Don Walters. "If we can get that, then we'll be good. We know where everybody's splits should be before we ever run the race. Last week we had them within one or two seconds and that's all we can ask for. Every course is different and we just adjust."Â
Evansville impressed last Friday at the Walt Crawford Open in Charleston, Ill. as the Aces' men finished in third with UE's women earning a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Anna Lowry led the way for the Aces, finishing eighth with a PR of 18:41.9.
"I was very surprised. I was not expecting a PR the first race," said sophomore Anna Lowry. "I'd never run on that course either. I knew kind of where it was at and I'd looked at it online, but coming into it I didn't really know what to expect and it was really nice starting the season off with a PR and close to the front of the pack."
For the Aces' men's team, junior Stanley Chepchieng paced Evansville with a time of 28:14.2, finishing in 15th. The second Ace on the afternoon to produce a PR was senior Jordan Capenter, who finished in 24th-place in a time of 28:29.1.
"I was really satisfied where I was. I haven't run since my sophomore year and I'm a senior now so going out fast and running with the pack, I really enjoyed that again," said senior Jordan Carpenter. "I was really surprised with my placement on the team, finishing second for us and also PR-ing. I was really happy with that and seeing that my training over the last few years has been worthwhile."
Hosted by the University of Alabama Huntsville, Saturday's races begin with the men's 8k race at 9 a.m., followed by the women's 5k race at 9:45 a.m. at Sharon Johnston Park.
