Aces drop home contest to EIU

EVANSVILLE - Troubled by turnovers, the University of Evansville women's basketball team fell to Eastern Illinois, 90-44, on Tuesday evening inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Freshman Abby Feit led the Aces in scoring for the third time in her first four collegiate games, scoring 10 points and recording seven rebounds. Also gathering seven boards was redshirt junior Jada Poland, while sophomore Sydney Tucker came off the bench to score eight points. The Panthers were powered by five double-figure scorers, including a game-high 17 points by Karle Pace.

Evansville struggled to get going early as Eastern Illinois built a 6-1 lead in the opening moments of the game. After EIU increased its lead to 8-1, Evansville battled back, scoring six unanswered points on three-pointers by sophomore A'Niah Griffin and Feit. EIU responded to the Aces' run with a 9-0 run of its own, holding 17-7 lead with 3:28 left in the first quarter. The Aces again had an answer late in the quarter as Evansville pushed back within six at 21-15 at the conclusion of the opening period.

In the second quarter, Evansville got as close as three as Tucker knocked down a triple inside the first minute of the quarter to cut the Panthers' advantage to 21-18. Despit the fact that EIU would grow its lead as high as 12 in the quarter, Evansville still found itself down just nine at the break at 34-25.

An early three in the second half propelled the Panthers back in front by double digits, but the Aces were again able to trim back EIU's lead. Freshman Anna Newman answered with a pair of free throws at the line that moved Evansville within 10 at 37-27. Following the free throws, EIU closed the period on a 23-4 run, gaining a 60-31 lead for the Panthers. The lead increased in the fourth quarter as EIU shot 60.9% (14-23) from the field over the final 10 minutes en route to the Panthers' 90-44 win.

In the loss, Evansville was out-rebounded, 47-28, resulting in 20 second-chance points for EIU. The Aces also were bothered by turnovers, committing 31 in the game that the Panthers turned into 37 points.

The Aces face a quick turnaround and bounce-back opportunity when Evansville travels to take on Austin Peay on Thursday evening at 7 PM in Clarksville, Tenn.
