Austin Peay up next for Aces

EVANSVILLE - Looking to bounce-back after a Tuesday night loss, the University of Evansville women's basketball team travels to Clarksville, Tenn. to take on Austin Peay on Thursday night.

Last Game: Eastern Illinois 90, Evansville 44
  • Freshman Abby Feit led the Aces in scoring for the third time in her first four collegiate games, scoring 10 points and recording seven rebounds.
  • Also gathering seven boards was redshirt junior Jada Poland, while sophomore Sydney Tucker came off the bench to score eight points.
  • The Panthers were powered by five double-figure scorers, including a game-high 17 points by Karle Pace.
  • Evansville struggled to get going early as Eastern Illinois built a 6-1 lead in the opening moments of the game.
  • After EIU increased its lead to 8-1, Evansville battled back, scoring six unanswered points on three-pointers by sophomore A'Niah Griffin and Feit.
  • EIU responded to the Aces' run with a 9-0 run of its own, holding 17-7 lead with 3:28 left in the first quarter.
  • The Aces again had an answer late in the quarter as Evansville pushed back within six at 21-15 at the conclusion of the opening period.
  • In the second quarter, Evansville got as close as three as Tucker knocked down a triple inside the first minute of the quarter to cut the Panthers' advantage to 21-18.
  • Despite the fact that EIU would grow its lead as high as 12 in the quarter, Evansville still found itself down just nine at the break at 34-25.
  • An early three in the second half propelled the Panthers back in front by double digits, but the Aces were again able to trim back EIU's lead.
  • Freshman Anna Newman answered with a pair of free throws at the line that moved Evansville within 10 at 37-27.
  • Following the free throws, EIU closed the period on a 23-4 run, gaining a 60-31 lead for the Panthers.
  • The lead increased in the fourth quarter as EIU shot 60.9% (14-23) from the field over the final 10 minutes en route to the Panthers' 90-44 win.
  • In the loss, Evansville was out-rebounded, 47-28, resulting in 20 second-chance points for EIU.
  • The Aces also were bothered by turnovers, committing 31 in the game that the Panthers turned into 37 points.
Previewing the Matchup
  • Evansville and Austin Peay are meeting for the 20th time in series history with the Governors owning an 11-8 advantage in the series.
  • The Aces and Governors last met on Dec. 18, 2018 as Evansville earned its second win of the season with a 56-52 triumph over Austin Peay inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
  • Of the 56 points the Aces scored in lasts eason's meeting, 23 of the points were scored by players on the current roster, led by A'Niah Griffin's seven points.
  • The last time the two sides met in Clarksville, Austin Peay earned a narrow 82-73 victory over the Aces on Dec. 2, 2017.
  • The game marks the Aces' fourth-straight game against Ohio Valley Conference competition, going 0-3 against the previous three teams from the OVC.
  • Under head coach Matt Ruffing, Evansville is 4-13 against OVC competition.
  • Austin Peay comes into Thursday's matchup with a 3-1 record, including wins over NCAA DII sides Kentucky Wesleyan and Christian Brothers and Mississippi Valley State.
  • The lone loss of the season for the Governors came in a 14-point loss on the road at Illinois on Nov. 13.
  • Senior Arielle Gonzalez-Varner leads the Governors in scoring at just over 13 points per contest, adding 8.5 rebounds. Gonzalez-Varner will play the Aces for the first time Thursday after missing last season's game.
