Evansville tops Marshall in dramatic overtime win

EVANSVILLE - Powered by a trio of double-figure scorers, the University of Evansville women's basketball team grinded out a 66-62 overtime victory over Marshall inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.

Evansville was led by junior Jada Poland, who scored a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Following Poland were freshman Abby Feit with 17 points and nine boards and sophomore A'Niah Griffin with 16 points. For the Herd, Khadaijia Brooks finished with a team-best 15 points.

The Aces struggled coming out of the gate in the contest, finding themselves down 14-3 with 4:19 left in the first quarter. Evansville would battle back to close the period, as 10 first quarter points from Feit helped the Aces close to within five at 18-13. In the second quarter, the run continued for Evansville. After Marshall led 25-17 with 6:06 left in the half, the Aces scored 12 unanswered points to close the quarter and take a 29-25 advantage to the half.

Halftime only fueled the Aces as coming out of the break, Evansville pushed its lead even larger. Poland scored eight-straight Evansville points during a 1:50 stretch of the third quarter as the Aces lead ballooned to 11 at 46-35. The Herd had a run left in them to close the quarter as Marshall answered what Evansville did in the second quarter and scored 12-straight points to take a 47-46 lead with 10 minutes remaining. In the fourth, Evansville quickly retook the lead, gaining a one-point advantage just over a minute in on a layup by Poland. The lead moved back into the hands of the Herd 38 seconds later, but Evansville again answered to retake the lead. After the Aces took the lead, Evansville built its advantage as high as seven with 2:27 left. As was true in the third quarter, Marshall concluded the fourth period wih a 7-0 run, tying the game on a layup in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

Evansville took the overtime lead on a pair of free throws by sophomore Makayla Wallace with 4:25 on the clock. Marshall tied the game two minutes later on a jumper by Brookss that tied the contest at 62. With under a minute to play, Feit hit a layup that pushed the Aces ahead by two, a lead Evansville would never relinquish, making defensive stops down the stretch to gain the 66-62 win.

After committing 64 combined turnovers in its last two contests, Evansville turned the ball over just 15 times, while forcing 18 Marshall turnovers. The Aces also out-rebounded the Herd by three, 48-45.

Evansville takes a long break for the Thanksgiving holiday and returns to action on Dec. 3 against Murray State inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
