Evansville finishes fourth at MAC Championships

OXFORD, Ohio - Holding on to its position on the final day of action, the University of Evansville men's swimming and diving team earned a fourth-place finish at the 2019 MAC Championships in Oxford, Ohio.

The Aces secured a fourth-place finish with a 19.5 point margin over fifth-place finishing Ball State, 339.5-320. Evansville's finish marked its best finish at the MAC Championships since joining the MAC in 2009. Host Miami (Ohio) captured the MAC Championship with 957.5 points, finishing 58.5 points in front of second-place Missouri State.

Finals competition on the fourth day at the championships began with the three meter dive. In the B final, senior Miguel Marcano earned the top spot, finishing ninth with a score of 233.90.

Four Aces earned top 15 finishes in the 1650 yard freestyle, led by freshman Oskar Menkhaus. Swimming to a 10th-place finish, Menkhaus recorded a time of 16:18.93. Following Menkhause were junior Samad Abu-Shanab (16:27.05), sophomore Pete Lingo (16:27.34), and freshman Ee Tsien Tan (16:38.38) in 11th, 12th, and 14th-place, respectively.

Evansville sent three swimmers to the B final of the 200 yard backstroke. Sophomore Credence Pattinson continued his strong championships with an 11th-place finish, while junior Brandt Hudson finished in 12th and freshman David Killian secured a 13th-place finish.

The 100 yard freestyle saw senior Jared Sutphin lead the way for the Aces. Sutphin finished in 11th, tallying a time of 46.17 to lead the Aces' contingent in the event. Senior Matt Duke earned a top 15 finish with a time of 46.74, while sophomore Austin Smith had a time of 46.96, earning him a 16th-place finish.

In the 200 yard breaststroke, a pair of Aces earned two more top 15 finishes for Evansville. Finishing in 11th, sophomore Eli James completed the event in a time of 2:06.26 for an 11th-place finish, followed by sophomore Pierce Lively, who captured a 14th-place finish with a time of 2:09.05.

Placing a swimmer in the A final, Evansville excelled in the final individual event of the championships, the 200 yard butterfly. Junior Paul Cozzens finished eighth while competing in the A final in a time of 1:54.38. Joining Cozzens in the 200 yard butterfly were junior Zack Sagan (10th-place), sophomore Ryan Wood (11th-place), and freshman Jacob Bailey (15th-place).

Concluding the championships, the Aces picked up a fourth place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay. An experience-laden team of Pattinson, Duke, Sutphin, and Hudson finished in a time of 3:03.54, taking fourth-place by a nearly two-and-a-half second margin over fifth-place Ball State.
