EVANSVILLE - In its final exhibition of the preseason, the University of Evansville men's soccer team secured a 1-1 draw with Northwestern on Friday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind.
The Aces and Wildcats combined for 23 shots in the match with Northwestern narrowly edging Evansville in shots, 12-11. Evansville had the advantage on shots in the second half, out-shooting the Wildcats, 10-4, in the final 45 minutes.
The opening half featured the bulk of the action in the midfield as both teams strived to secure possession. In the 34th minute, Northwestern opened the scoring with a goal by Spencer Howard off an assist by Ty Seager.
Evansville could not find the answer to the Wildcats in the first half, but did so in the 67th minute. After a shot from freshman Matic Pavlic was saved on a diving attempt by Northwestern keeper Miha Miskovic, senior Ben Weber collected the rebounded shot and finished in the back of the net. Neither side could find the game-winner late in the 1-1 draw.
After the conclusion of regulation, the Aces and Wildcats went to penalty kicks with Northwestern earning a 4-3 advantage in the shootout.
The Aces are back in action on August 30 at 6 p.m. as Evansville opens the regular season against Eastern Illinois at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
