Box Score INDIANAPOLIS - In its first road contest of the season, the University of Evansville men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to Butler on Monday evening in Indianapolis, Ind.
"Butler's always a difficult place to play. We came out and imposed ourselves in the match in the first 35 minutes and were hard done by not to get an opportunity," said Aces' head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "We gave up the goal and dropped a bit. Mentally, we need to be a little more focused in those situations. We came out in the second half and were strong. Had the ball off the cross bar and a few other chances. Again, we've got to be better in our boxes on both ends of the field. For us, right now, we're capable of playing. We just have to put 90 minutes together. Its a long season and we're looking forward to the next opportunity to get out on the field against SIUE."
The early going saw the Aces hold an edge in aggressiveness, earning four corners inside the first 15 minutes, but could not convert on the opportunities. Butler opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Alex Lehtinen lifted a ball into the box that Logan Lee headed over the head of Frederik Reimer and in. Evansville kept its deficit at one heading into the half.
The Aces had a great chance early in the second half in an attempt to tie the match. In the 48th minute, Evansville earned a free kick from 25 yard out. Senior Ben Weber struck the ball after redshirt senior Zac Blaydes and senior Jesse Stafford-Lacey both ran through. Weber's effort sailed over the wall and dropped down towards goal, glancing off the cross bar and out. In the final 30 minutes, Butler increased its lead to two as Brandon Guhl found the back of the net in the 64th minute as the Bulldogs earned the 2-0 win.
Despite being out-shot 15-7 in the match, the Aces held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Evansville hits the midway point of a three-match road trip on Friday evening when the Aces take on SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill.
