Craig's big day spoiled by late TTU rally

Box Score COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Despite building an eight-run lead, the University of Evansville baseball team dropped its series finale to Tennessee Tech, 11-10, on Sunday afternoon in Cookeville, Tenn.

"Results don't show it, but we played some good baseball over the weekend," said Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll. "Tanner Craig had a special series and it was great to see Jake McMahill dominate the way he did. This is a tough place to play and you have to credit TTU for getting the offense needed."

Recap: Tennessee Tech 11, Evansville 10

The long ball was the theme of the day as the two teams combined to hit seven home runs on the day.

It was Evansville who opened the game with the lead, much like it had in both contests on Saturday. In the top of the second, Danny Borgstrom tripled to left center, scoring Evan Kahre. Two batters later, Brent Widders reached on a fielding error, allowing Borgstrom to come home to give the Aces a 2-0 lead.

Evansville's lead was cut in half in the bottom of the fourth as the Golden Eagles scored a run to trim the Aces' advantage to 2-1. Senior Jake McMahill was strong on the mound for Evansville, pitching five full innings, striking out six, and allowing just one run on three hits without walking a batter.

The middle innings were a home run derby for the Aces as Evansville hit three homers. Tanner Craig came to the plate in the top of the fifth and hit a deep shot to center field, scoring two runs and pushing the Aces in front, 4-1. In the sixth, Evansville tacked on four more runs on a sacrifice fly by Craig Shepherd and the fourth home run of the weekend by Tanner Craig as Evansville held a commanding 8-1 lead.

After TTU took a run back in the bottom half of the sixth, Evansville responded with another home run, this one off the bat of Danny Borgstrom, whose two-run blast gave the Aces a 10-2 lead and put the sophomore just a double shy of the cycle.

The Golden Eagles showed plenty of fight down the stretch as TTU closed to within three runs after a four-run rally in the seventh inning.

The bottom of the ninth proved to be the breakthrough for the Golden Eagles. After placing a pair of runners on with no outs, Luke Jones tied the game with a three-run home run to right. In the next at bat, Jason Hinchman hit his third homer of the day, this one a solo shot that proved to be the walk-off winner for Tennessee Tech.
