EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Set to graduate later this month, University of Evansville volleyball senior Cecilia Thon was recognized with the Missouri Valley Conference President's Council Academic Excellence Award. UE President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz presented Thon with the award on Friday.
The prestigious honor requires a 3.8 cumulative grade point average, a minimum of two years of participation in athletics and the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation at the time of the recognition.
"I am very proud of all that Cecilia has done for our program," Purple Aces head volleyball coach Fernando Morales exclaimed. "She has led by example on and off the court. This is a great way for her to close a great career at UE."
Thon is finishing her studies as an International Studies major. In her time at UE, she has accumulated a 3.96 GPA. In November, Thon earned MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention recognition.
Since arriving on campus, Thon has played a significant role in the transformation of the program. Her freshman campaign in 2018 saw UE finish with 10 wins before making the jump in 2019 to a 16-14 record. The Aces earned their first berth in the MVC Championship since 2008 that season while earning a finish above .500. UE completed the 2021 campaign on Monday, finishing with 21 victories and a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.
Individually, Thon enjoyed her best season on the court in 2021. She was named to the All-Tournament Team in September's Eagle Challenge at Morehead State after registering 8.70 assists, 2.70 digs and 0.80 blocks per set. She added a career-high 34 assists in a win over MSU. Thon wrapped up the season with one of the top 30 service ace averages in the league.
