ST. LOUIS, Mo. - University of Evansville men's soccer defenders Raphaello Colasito and Ethan Garvey have been named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention, it was announced in a release by the Conference office on Wednesday morning.
"It is a fitting honor for Raph and Ethan. Both of them are models of what a student-athlete should be here at UE, and in the larger scope of the NCAA," said Aces head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "The University of Evansville is committed to providing our student-athletes with the most competitive environment on the field and in the classroom, and these two step up to that challenge every day."
A recipient of the 2019-20 Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award, Colasito receives his first MVC scholar-athlete honor following the 2020-21 campaign. AÂ consistent presence for Evansville along its backline, Colasito played and started in all 10 matches, recording one shot on the season. The public health major with a 3.65 GPA saw 892 minutes on the pitch out of a possible 920, tying for second-most minutes on the team.
Garvey was named 2020 MVC Preseason All-Conference prior to the season and, like Colasito, receives MVC scholar-athlete recognition for the first time this season. A sophomore with a 3.65 GPA in economics, Garvey played in 10 matches, starting all but one this season, spending 872 minutes out of a possible 920 on the pitch. Garvey recorded an assist against Bradley on March 22, helping the Aces earn a draw, and led Evansville's defenders with five shots.
The Valley's scholar-athlete team is voted on by the league's soccer sports information directors.
The criteria for the all-MVC honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular season matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution
