Last Match: Evansville 1, Loyola Chicago 1 (2OT)
- Behind an impressive defensive effort, the University of Evansville men's soccer battled Loyola Chicago to a scoreless draw on Saturday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville.
- "A deserved point for the effort the guys put in this evening," said Aces head men's soccer coach Marshall Ray. "We regrouped from our trip out west and battled. We;re looking forward to getting another week of training in and heading to Missouri State."
- For just the second time this season, Loyola was held scoreless with the Aces defense locking-in and eliminating many quality chances from the Ramblers. In goal, redshirt junior Jacob Madden posted his first shutout in white and purple, recording eight saves on 19 Loyola shots. Evansville's backline remained primarily intact for the entirety of the match with Ethan Garvey playing all 110 minutes, Raphaello Perez Colasito spending 105 minutes on the pitch, Oliver Hald playing 100 minutes, and Francesco Brunetti playing 89 minutes before going down with cramps.
- Both defense won out in the opening 45 minutes as Loyola tallied four shots in the first half, putting two on-goal that Madden saved. The attack heated up in the second half with both sides generating opportunities. Evansville saw its best opportunity of the match come in the 77th minute as Filip Johansson dribbled 25 yards into the box without much pressure and fired a shot on target that Loyola keeper Marcel Kampman saved to preserve the scoreless match.
- In all, Evansville recorded two shots in the second half with one on frame, while the Ramblers recorded 13 shots in the half, six of which were saved by Madden.
- Evansville controlled possession in the first overtime period, pushing the ball to the wings looking to whip the ball into the box, but Loyola's defense stayed discipline as neither side recorded a shot in the first extra 10 minutes. The second overtime period saw both teams generate more opportunities with three combined shots. The only shot on goal in the second overtime came from Pablo Guillen who looped in a shot from 30 yards out that sent the keeper back to the goal line before making the save.
Previewing the Matchup
- Evansville and Missouri State are meeting for the 38th time in series history with the Bears owning a 23-10-4 advantage in the all-time series.
- The Bears enter the weekend with a streak of 10 matches unbeaten by the Aces, but Evansville has put in strong performances many times against the perennially ranked side, tying the Bears twice during that span and playing within one goal three times.
- Missouri State captured the last meeting between the Aces and Bears, 4-1, but the last time the two met in Springfield, Evansville gave the then-17th-ranked Bears all they could handle. After an early Missouri State goal, Evansville tied the match in the 64th minute on a goal by Pablo Guillen. The Aces held strong before the Bears were awarded a penalty and converted it in the 86th minute of the 2-1 win.
- Entering the weekend, Missouri State holds a 5-1 overall record and is coming off a 1-0 win at SIUE to open MVC play last Sunday. In non-conference play, the Bears suffered their first non-con regular season loss since Sept. 10, 2017 when Missouri State fell to Tulsa 3-0 on Sept. 3 this season.
Madden Between the Posts
- Evansville goalkeeper Jacob Madden impressed between the posts in a scoreless draw with Loyola on Saturday night.
- Madden stopped eight Rambler shots, earning his first clean sheet as an Ace and recording the first shutout for Evansville since a 1-0 win over UNC Asheville on Sept. 14, 2019.
- For his efforts in goal, Madden was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, his first honor as an Ace.
Perez Colasito leads the Backline
- Fifth-year senior Raphaello Perez Colasito continues to be a leader on the backline for the Aces.
- Perez Colasito played all 110 minutes against Loyola on Saturday and has missed just 20 minutes of action all season for Evansville.
- Evansville's backline remained primarily intact for the entirety of the match with Ethan Garvey playing all 110 minutes, Raphaello Perez Colasito spending 105 minutes on the pitch, Oliver Hald playing 100 minutes, and Francesco Brunetti playing 89 minutes before going down with cramps.
- Along with his performance on the field, the fifth-year senior also has gotten the job done in the classroom and in the community, earning this week's MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor.
