EVANSVILLE - Opening the season with the first of their three home meets, the University of Evansville men's and women's cross country teams performed well at the Evansville Opener on Friday evening at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville.

Both men's and women's teams finished in fifth-place with the men competing in a six-team field and the women joining a group of seven teams. Ohio State captured both the men's and women's team medals, winning over Marquette.

Senior Sam Weldon paced Evansville's women, capturing a 33rd-place finish with a time of 20:37.7. In a group of three just 30 seconds behind Weldon were Emma Boebinger (37th, 21:06.3), Ellie Stewart (38th, 21:09.4), and Kaitlyn Sansone (39th, 21:10.2).

Evansville put two more inside the top 50 in the 5k as sophomore Tess Crosley came hone in 44th with a time of 21:27.5, followed by fellow sophomore Emma Denbo in 49th in 23:12.9. Junior Claire Griffy finished the opener in 58th with a time of 31.53.1 to round-out the Aces competitors in the race.

On the men's side, sophomore Peter Ekayi Epur turned-in an impressive performance, securing a 25th-place finish, crossing the line in a time of 27:13.9. Not far behind Epur came a newcomer to Evansville. Freshman Adam Oulgout showed well in his opening performance in white and purple, finishing 30th with a time of 27:30.7.

Two more freshman followed Oulgout with Justin Nichols (29:23.4) and Jacob Moffat (30:51.0) finishing in 36th and 42nd, respectively. Senior Carson Kline crossed the finish line in 44th with a time of 31:19.7, while sophomore Luke Watts bringing home a 48th-place finish in 33:15.6.

Evansville is back on the course on Sept. 18 with a trip to the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
