Day 1 - Women's MVC Showcase Reults
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Evansville men's swimming and diving team posted four podium finishes Friday in action against Southern Illinois and Missouri State, while the UE women's team recorded three podium finishes on day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Showcase. Both meets took place at the SIU Recreation Center in Carbondale, Illinois.
On the men's side, junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel) showed why he is one of the best breaststroke swimmers in the Midwest, as he took home the individual title in the 100-Yard Breaststroke in a time of 56.25. Baer also teamed with senior Riccardo Di Domenico (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomores Patrik Vilbergsson (Kopavogur, Iceland) and Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) to place third in the 400-Yard Medley Relay in a time of 3:21.34.
Di Domenico also placed third in the 100-Yard Butterfly (51.11) and fifth in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:42.63), as UE's top finisher in both events. Junior Jackson Caudill (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) posted a second-place finish in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 9:43.69. Freshman Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) was UE's top finisher in the 50 Free with a time of 21.37, while fellow freshman Levi McKinney (Boonville, Ind./Boonville) also placed fifth in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 220.85.
On the women's side, junior diver Madison Rollett (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) posted UE's top individual finish on the day with a second-place showing in the three-meter competition with a score of 222.15. Senior Maya Cunningham (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) posted a third-place finish in the 400-Yard IM with a time of 4:29.07, while junior Iryna Tsesiul (Minsk, Belarus) also notched a podium finish in the 100-Yard Backstroke with a time of 58.12.
Sophomore diver Valorie Marx (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) finished three spots back of Rollett in the three-meter competition with a score of 180.90, while senior Sonsoles Aguayo (Jerez, Spain) also placed fifth in the 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:57.43. Cunningham also was UE's top finisher in the 100 Fly with a sixth-place time of 58.16, while sophomore Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) also placed sixth in the 50 Free with a UE-best time of 25.25. Senior Sage Moore (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.71.
"Overall, I thought it was a good first day," said UE head coach Stuart Wilson. "We are still going hard in practice, so the times are slower than they will be come championship time, but it was still good to race against good competition and see where we are at against some of the best swimmers and divers in our conference.
"Now, it will be interesting to see how we bounce back on day two with short rest."
Day two of the men's meet against Southern Illinois and Missouri State and the women's MVC Showcase will kick-off Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
