Aces storm past Drake in Senior Day victory

EVANSVILLE - On a day that the Aces celebrated their five seniors, the University of Evansville men's soccer team put on one of its most thorough performances of the season, earning a 3-0 win over Drake in MVC action at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Sunday in Evansville.

Sophomore Nacho Diaz returned to his scoring way, recording a pair of goals against the Bulldogs to bring his season total to an MVC-best nine goals. Diaz was involved in all three goals on the day, earning an assist on the first goal of the day which junior Kai Phillip turned-in for his fifth goal of the year. In goal, Alex Vidizzoni faced five shots, including one on goal, making one save to capture his fifth shutout of the year.

Evansville wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard as Diaz fired a shot in the seventh minute that deflected off a defender and fell to Phillip, who clipped it into the back of the net for the opener. Just over five minutes later, the Aces found their second of the opening half as junior Tobias Bak whipped in a cross that Diaz finished to make it a 2-0 lead for Evansville inside the first quarter hour of the match. Evansville's defense excelled in the first 45 minutes, allowing just three shots from the Bulldogs with none coming on goal.

The Aces came out of the second half with the same energy they did to open the match, winning possession and staying on the attack. Earning a free kick from 30 yards out, junior Oliver Hald placed it perfectly, finding Diaz inside the six, who snuck in front his defender and headed it in near post to make it a three-goal lead. As the final minutes ticked away, Evansville nearly made it four goals on the day, but freshman Tancredi Fadda's goal was waved off due to offside.

Evansville faces a quick turnaround, next facing Indiana in non-conference action on Tuesday night at 6 PM at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville. Tickets are available for the match here.
