EVANSVILLE - A pair of second half goals and a strong defensive effort late helped lead the University of Evansville women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville.
Fifth-year forward Emily Ormson scored her second goal of the young season in the match, while senior forward Sophia Rodil registered just the second goal of her career and her first since Oct. 16, 2019. In goal, sophomore Sophie Lindner earned her first collegiate appearance in goal, making one save and recording the win in 90 minutes between the posts.
Much of the early portions of the contest were dominated by possession changing hands in the midfield as both teams combined for five shots in the opening half. Evansville saw its best chance of the opening 45 minutes occur in the 21st minute as Ormson looked to bring the ball down entering the 18 and put a shot just over the bar. Senior Emilie Hill tested Morehead State goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski in the 33rd minute with a shot that was saved by the Eagle keeper as the match went to the break in a scoreless tie.
The increase in intensity was clear early in the second half with both sides cranking up the aggressiveness. Morehead State saw the urgency pay off in the 59th minute as a ball near the end line was slipped across the face of goal by Hadley Cytron and Nicole Fiantaco found it, slotting it home to put the Eagles in front, 1-0. It would not take long though for Evansville to equal the match up with Ormson finding the ball at her feet in the 62nd minute. Ormson dribbled across the top of the 18, stopping just past the halfway point and spinning a shot towards goal that snuck in the far post.
Evansville appeared to be sparked by the equalizer, getting on the front foot and attacking Morehead State. In the 68th minute, freshman Chrysta Vasquez received a ball from senior Monique Landrum and made a run down the right side, whipping in a cross into the box that Rodil squared up and headed into the back of the net to put Evansville in front.
The 76th minute presented Lindner's biggest test of the final 20 minutes with a shot from Chelsea Elmore, but the Austrian keeper made the save to help preserve the Aces 2-1 win.
Evansville is back in action on Thursday with its first road trip of the season to face SIUE at 7 PM in Edwardsville, Ill.
