ELKHART, Ind. – University of Evansville senior Riccardo Di Domenico (Johannesburg, South Africa) posted UE's best finish on day two of the CSCAA National Invitational Championships on Friday, as he finished sixth in the consolation final of the men's 200-Yard Freestyle.
Di Domenico posted a time of 1:38.24 to place sixth in the 10-person consolation final on Friday and place 16th overall out of 79 competitors in the men's 200-Yard Freestyle. It moved the UE men's team score to 69.5 points through two days of competition.
"Today was a really fast day in the pool overall, and I thought that we had some really good swims," said UE head coach Stuart Wilson. "To see Riccardo make the finals was good to see, and we had a couple of others who just barely missed making the finals in closely-contested races. Overall, I thought that we had a good day today, and we have one more day tomorrow, so let's finish strong!"
Junior Alon Baer (Gesher HaZiv, Israel) just barely missed making Friday's finals in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, as he placed 23rd out of 70 competitors with a time of 54.72. He finished just 0.12 seconds shy of qualifying for the consolation finals, and 0.65 seconds shy of making the main final. Freshman Daniil Goncharuk (Kyiv, Ukraine – 56.58), senior Max Dehen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka – 57.58) and sophomore Benjamin Hasanovic (Innsbruck, Austria – 57.85) also represented UE in the 100-Yard Breaststroke field.
Sophomore Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) also placed 23rd out of 86 competitors in the men's 100-Yard Butterfly. He was just 0.43 seconds away from qualifying for Friday night's finals.
The UE men's 800 Free Relay team (Di Domenico, sophomores Jakob Grundbacher and Carlos Souto, and junior Grant Kay) and the 200 Medley Relay team (sophomore Patrik Vilbergsson, Baer, Santos Lopez, and Goncharuk) both placed 28th overall with times of 6:49.98 and 1:30.38, respectively.
Vilbergsson also placed 32nd overall in the men's 100-Yard Backstroke event with a preliminary round time of 49.82. Just 0.71 seconds separated Vilbergsson from advancing to Friday night's finals in the event. Kay also joined Di Domenico in the 200-Yard Freestyle field on Friday morning, and posted a time of 1:41.92.
On the women's side, junior Iryna Tsesiul (Minsk, Belarus) competed in the 100-Yard Backstroke and posted a time of 57.41. UE also posted a time of 1:46.22 in the women's 200-Yard Medley Relay, with Tsesiul leading off with a time of 25.87 in the 50-Yard Backstroke. Sophomore Mari Müller (Zurich, Switzerland) then posted a time of 30.39 in the 50-Yard Breaststroke, before fellow sophomore Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) posted a 50-Yard Butterfly split time of 25.36. Senior Allison McDonald (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Central) then came home in a 50-Yard Freestyle split time of 24.60 in her final collegiate race.
The CSCAA National Invitational Championships will conclude on Saturday, with preliminary round action starting at 8:30 a.m. central time, distance finals starting at 12:30 p.m., and finals beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday's schedule will include action in the 100 IM, the 200-Yard Backstroke, the 100-Yard Freestyle, the 200-Yard Breaststroke, 200-Yard Butterfly, the 1,650-Yard Freestyle, and 400-Yard Freestyle Relay.
