RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Evansville baseball team fell in game two of the series at Cal Baptist, dropping a 10-3 decision.
Seven Aces had at least one hit, led by Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) with two hits, Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind./North) with two hits and two RBI, and Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois) with a home run.
Freshman Tanner Graham (Rocheport, Mo./Hickman) was solid in his first career start, tossing a career-high five innings while allowing three runs, striking out four. Graham took the loss, while Cal Baptist's Ryan Palmer got the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Evansville put a pair of runners on base in the top of the first, but were kept off the board. In the home half of the inning, CBU used a leadoff single, a stolen base, and another single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Aces answered right back in the top of the second, as Reader led off the inning and deposited the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. However, the Lancers got the run back in the bottom of the inning with a sac fly before a solo home run in the bottom of the third made it a 3-1 lead for CBU.
In the bottom of the fourth, Graham delivered a big zero, stranding a leadoff double with a strikeout and a pair of fly outs to keep it a two-run game.
Evansville threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but came up empty. Graham kept the score at 3-1, though, putting up another zero in the fifth.
The Aces put together another threat in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Nehls would deliver a sac fly to drive in one, but the Aces were limited to one run as the Lancers hung onto a 3-2 lead.
CBU got the run right back in the sixth with a solo home run and broke things open in the seventh, taking an 8-2 lead with a two-out grand slam.
Nehls drove in another run in the top of the eighth, lifting a double down the left field line to score Reeder, but another CBU homer in the eight pushed the Lancers' lead to seven before a 1-2-3 inning clinched a 10-3 for the home team.
