NASHVILLE – The University of Evansville baseball team took an early lead over Belmont on Saturday afternoon, but the Bruins scored nine unanswered runs en route to an 11-7 victory to even the series.
Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) went 2-for-5 with a 3-run home run to lead the Aces offensively, while Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) and Ximi Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris) also had 2-hit days.
Tanner Graham (Rocheport, Mo./Hickman) suffered his first MVC loss, while Ridge Harvey got the win for Belmont.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the top of the first, Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) drew a leadoff HBP to extend his on base streak to 33 games, tying Troy Beilsmith for the longest streak by an Ace since 2019. However, a double play kept the Aces off the board.
Evansville got on the board in the top of the second, with Longmeier crossing the plate on a first and third play and Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo./Northeast CC) picked up an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Belmont scored their first run of the game in the third before scoring three times in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Belmont added another run in the fifth with a solo home run before scoring four more runs in the sixth to break the game open.
Evansville got two runs back in the eighth, starting with a walk to Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and singles from Haire and Longmeier to load the bases. Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois) drew a walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run and Baftiri drove in a run with a groundout to make it 9-4 in favor of the Bruins.
Belmont got the runs right back in the eighth, however, retaking a 7-run lead.
Evansville would not go down quietly in the ninth, putting two out with two outs, including a single by McConnell to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Haire stepped up next and drilled his sixth home run of the season, making it an 11-7 game, but a strikeout ended the game as the Bruins evened the series at one game apiece.
