WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Evansville men's soccer team fell to No. 9 Georgetown, 3-2, on Monday.
Evansville struck first in the fourth minute when Alejandro Fernandez found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Fernandez opened the scoring after a Georgetown defender cleared a corner kick out of the box. Positioned just outside the top of the box, Fernandez fired a shot through traffic that deflected off a Georgetown player and into the right side of the net.
Georgetown responded with the equalizer in the 18th minute, scoring on a rebound following a deflected shot.
The teams found few opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, with Evansville recording two shots and Georgetown adding one. The Aces nearly regained the lead in the 36th minute when Fernandez created space for a shot, but the attempt was saved by the Georgetown goalkeeper.
Evansville regained the lead just six minutes into the second half. Fernandez played a ball to Devin Shepherd, who finished the chance for his second goal of the season to put the Aces ahead, 2-1.
The Hoyas answered in the 64th minute with the equalizer before taking their first lead of the night five minutes later, making it 3-2.
The Aces continued to generate chances in the final 20 minutes, recording six shots during the stretch. Alex Tura accounted for four of those attempts, including a shot in the 79th minute that was saved by the Georgetown goalkeeper near the upper-right corner of the net.
With the loss, Evansville moves to 1-5-2 on the season. The Aces return home on Saturday, Sept. 26, opening Missouri Valley Conference play against Drake at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
