EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Creighton University Bluejays remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action on Friday night, as the visiting Bluejays downed the host University of Evansville Purple Aces, 3-0, at the Carson Center in Evansville.
The Bluejays, one of only two undefeated teams remaining in the MVC, used a hot start and a hot finish to defeat the Purple Aces 30-21, 30-27, 30-17. Creighton improved to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the Valley with the win, while Evansville dropped to 8-9 and 1-5 in the MVC.
Reigning all-MVC attacker Kelly Goc helped kick-start the Creighton offense in game one with five kills to lead the Bluejays to a 30-21 victory. Teammates Allie Oelke and Lauren Bloemke added nine kills in just 15 swings in the opening game to help the Bluejays set the tone for the match.
Evansville would battle back in game two, playing to a 27-27 tie late in the game. An Evansville service error, a quick kill by Goc, and an attack error by the Purple Aces would give Creighton a 30-27 victory in game two and control of the contest.
The Bluejays would seize control of the decisive game three early on thanks to three-straight kills by Goc to give Creighton an early four-point lead. Evansville would trim the lead back to three points twice early in the game, but the Bluejays would once again turn to Goc, who registered six kills in game three, to expand on the lead and cruise to a 30-17 victory to complete the three-game sweep.
Goc led the Creighton attack with 16 kills, while Bloemke added 11 kills on a .409 attack percentage. Senior outside hitter Megan Spurlock paced Evansville with 11 kills, but no other Purple Ace recorded more than four kills in the match. Fellow senior Julie Walroth added a match-high 22 digs defensively for Evansville.
Evansville will return to action next on Saturday, as the Purple Aces will host Drake (5-11, 2-3 in the MVC) at the Carson Center. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
