University of Evansville volleyball head coach Mike Swan lost five seniors at the conclusion of the season but has gained two new players to help fill the void. High school standouts Kaisi Nixon (Jasper, Ind./Jasper High School) and Brooke Maher (Mason, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) have signed letters-of-intent to play volleyball at UE next season.

"We were looking for a setter and outside hitter this fall, and we will go out and find a middle hitter in the spring," said Swan. "We are excited about bringing both girls on board."

Nixon, a 6'0 setter and right side hitter, led the Wildcats to a Big 8 conference championship and state finals appearance. Nixon received all-conference and all-state honors and was the recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award for 3A. She was also selected as one of two setters for the 2007 Class 3A/4A All-Star game. Leading the team in assists (528), passing efficiency (2.06), hitting percentage (.366) and service aces (109), Nixon was voted Most Valuable Player and received numerous team skill awards. Aside from volleyball, Nixon lettered in basketball and track.

"Kaisi is a tall, athletic setter who can block," said Swan. "She comes from an extensive athletic background and has a keen understanding of the game."

Despite missing part of the season for knee surgery, Maher led Ursuline Academy to a sectional title with a close five game win over Seton. In the match, the 5'11" outside hitter posted 20 kills and 24 digs. With her performances, she was voted to the All-League first team of the Scarlet Division in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League. Maher also helped her club team, Team Z 17 Orange, win the 2007 17 Open National Championships.

"Brooke is a great athlete," said Swan. "She is an excellent passer and will be a good defensive player. She is a smart outside hitter with good instincts."

Nixon and Maher will join the eight returning players for the 2008 season.
