UE Extends Win Streak To Five With Win At Lipscomb

9/11/2007 10:24:41 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Evansville volleyball squad extended their win streak to five with a win over Lipscomb on Tuesday night.  The Aces won their final non-conference match of the season in five games, 3-2.

The night started slowly for UE as the Lady Bison came out strong to take game one 16-30.  Lipscomb hit for a .312 percentage in the game as UE struggled offensively finishing the game with a hitting percentage of .000.

The deficit in game one sent a wake up call to the Aces in game two.  A defensive battle ensued as UE took the win 30-27.  Evansville connected on 11 blocks as team in the game to overcome their offensive woes.

Not to be outdone, Lipscomb showed poise in taking game three over UE 27-30.  Another neck and neck game became apparent in game four as the Aces evened things up with a win, 30-27.  Junior Sally Kulupka paced the UE offense in game four with seven kills.

In the final game of the night, neither team could really get on a roll, but the UE attack prevailed with a 15-13 win.  With the game tied at 13-13, Senior Megan Spurlock connected on a kill that was followed by a Lady Bison error that propelled UE to the win.

For the night, UE was led in kills by Kulupka with 20, as Spurlock chipped in 16.  With the match being a defensive battle throughout the night, the Aces had contribution from junior Kerry Sylvester, and seniors Anne Teegardin and Danielle Diehl who all finished with six blocks each.  Senior Julie Walroth led the team once again with 31 digs.

“Both teams really battled hard,” head coach Mike Swan said.  “It was a defensive struggle all night.  We found a way to win when we were not playing at our best.  I think that will help us this weekend and this win streak gives us some confidence heading into conference play.”

The Aces will begin Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend with two home matches.  Indiana State will come to the Carson Center on Friday for a 7:00 PM match.  On Saturday, Illinois State will be in town for another 7:00 PM start.
