EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The University of Evansville Purple Aces were outplayed by IUPUI in their home opener, as the Jaguars took the win, 3-0. A capacity crowd saw an Aces team struggle offensively against a steady Jaguar attack.
Early in game one, the Jaguars came out strong taking an early lead at 5-1. The Aces stayed in the game trailing 14-11 after exchanging service errors with IUPUI midway through the match. The Jags fired back scoring four straight to regain the lead at 18-11. The closest the Aces could get the rest of the match was five points as IUPUI took game one, 30-23.
In the second game, both teams played neck and neck as the score was knotted at 7-7 early after an Aces kill by junior Sally Kulupka. Midway through the match, juniors Kerry Sylvester, Kulupka and Emily Whitney nailed down three straight kills to pace UE to an 18-15 lead. IUPUI worked their way back into the game by going on a 12-4 run to lead 27-22. The Jags never looked back taking the win in game two, 30-24.
IUPUI came out strong after the break to take control early in game three scoring eight of the first ten points. That was enough to set the tone for the entire game as the Jaguars held on to the lead. The closest UE would get was five points during the final game as they struggled offensively with a -.071 hitting percentage.
UE was led in kills by Sylvester with seven, and sophomore Ginta Gabruseva finished with six. The Aces had troubles all night on the offensive end finishing with a hitting percentage of less than .100.
Sophomore Hillary Houston led the Jaguars with 11 kills while hitting for a percentage of .226. Senior Carol Newell also had double digit kills finishing the match with 10. Sophomore Danielle Goodnight had success serving with four service aces to go along with 27 assists.
The Aces will be in action again this weekend with three matches at Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. The first match of the weekend will be Friday at 6:00 PM against tourney host Xavier University.
