Aces Win Another OT Road Match

9/30/2007 4:12:21 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Freshman Mike Luttrull recovered from a knee injury just in time to score the game-winner for the University of Evansville men's soccer team this evening.  The forward from Indianapolis returned to his hometown and scored two goals in the Aces' 3-2 overtime victory against Butler.

It was the second overtime victory on the road this week for Evansville, which is now 6-4-0 heading into a 10-day layoff before opening Missouri Valley Conference play against Western Kentucky on October 10.  Butler is now 4-4-2.

Luttrull missed the previous three matches with a knee injury, but the Avon High School graduate returned to the lineup today and put Evansville on the board at 55:45 with a shot past the outstretched arms of Butler goalkeeper Nick Hegeman.  Butler had scored twice in the first half on headers, and still led 2-1 as the clock ticked down to the final minute.  That's when Evansville defender Kipp Erskine scored on a deflection following a shot from Dan Gibson to tie the match at 2-2 at 89:05, just 55 seconds before the end of regulation.  The OT winner came at 103:08 when Cory Elenio made a crossing pass that Luttrull headed in for his third goal of the year.  It was the second consecutive year in which the Aces beat the Bulldogs in overtime.

"I thought our players showed tremendous character," said Coach Mike Jacobs.  "We had a huge hole after getting behind 2-0, but our guys had the composure and confidence they needed to win.  This was a sign that this young team is growing up."

Evansville finished with 15 shots, six on goal, while the Bulldogs took a total of 11 shots, with three on goal against UE keeper Alec Dufty.
