9/5/2007 12:36:39 PM

With her stellar defensive performance last week, senior libero Julie Walroth was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 27.  This is the first MVC weekly honor for the University of Evansville volleyball program since last season when Kerry Sylvester earned Player of the Week honors in September of 2006.

At the Aussie Xavier Invitational last weekend, the Cincinnati, Ohio native was selected to the All-Tournament team while playing in her hometown.  She led the team in digs for all three matches during the tournament, finishing with 70 on the weekend and averaging 6.36 digs a game.  Against Xavier on Friday Aug. 31, Walroth had 20 digs, averaging 6.67 dpg.  She also had success the next day, Walroth had 21 digs against Eastern Michigan with 5.25 dpg, and against Delaware State, had 29 digs to average 7.25 dpg.

In Evansville’s midweek game against IUPUI on Aug. 29, Walroth had 16 digs to give her just over five a game.  She is currently third on the all-time UE dig list with 1,590 digs for her career.  Walroth needs 145 digs to move into second on the list.

The Aces will be back in action this weekend in the Bear Brawl at Mercer University.  UE will play Charleston Southern Friday morning at 9:00 AM, and again later in the day against tournament host Mercer at 6:00 PM.  Evansville will play their final match of the tournament on Saturday at 9:00 AM against Jackson State.  All times are central.
