Aces Seek Tournament Berth On Senior Night

The University of Evansville volleyball will be try to secure the fifth seed in the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament as they take on the Drake Bulldogs and Creighton Bluejays this weekend at Carson Center.

The Aces will also recognize seniors Katie Kincaid, Sally Kulupka, Kerry Sylvester, and Kyoko Nakamura before Friday's match with Drake for their accomplishments on and off the court. Kincaid, Kulupka, and Sylvester have all been four-year starters for the team while Nakamura was a walk-on this season. Kincaid and Sylvester have already put their names in the UE record books while Kulupka has had a strong senior season and is currently second on the team in kills.

The Aces were on the road last weekend at Missouri State and Wichita State. The Aces pushed both matches beyond three sets but the home teams came out on top 3-1 in both matches.

The Aces have four players who are averaging better than two kills per game with Brooke Maher (2.61), Kulupka (2.44), Emily Wandersee (2.34), and Kerry Sylvester (2.10).

Drake split their weekend series with Illinois State and Indiana State this past weekend to reach 10 wins for the first time since 2003. Angela Bys paces the Bulldog’s offense averaging 3.44 kills per set while Chelsea Lauersdorf has 922 assists on the season.

Creighton is 14-8 this season and 11-3 in the MVC while winning eight of their last nine matches. They had two wins this past weekend over Illinois State and Indiana State. Jessica Houts leads the team in kills per set at 3.23 and blocks per set at 1.33 while also hitting at a .284 mark. Defensively, the Bluejays are led by libero Bianca Rivera, who is averaging 4.68 digs per set.

Friday’s match with Drake will begin at 7 p.m. after a short ceremony for the 2008 seniors. The Aces will then face Creighton on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Carson Center.
