EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Drake Bulldogs spoiled the University of Evansville volleyball team’s senior night with a three-set sweep of the Aces at Carson Center on Friday night. Seniors Katie Kincaid, Sally Kulupka, Kyoko Nakamura, and Kerry Sylvester were recognized in a brief ceremony before the match.

 

With the loss, the Aces fall to 13-15 overall and 7-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake improved to 11-18 with their fourth win in conference play.

 

The Bulldogs took the first set, 25-22. The Aces battled back in the second set pushing the set past the 25 point mark but Drake prevailed 28-26 in the set. The Bulldogs gained momentum and pulled away in the third set with a 25-9 victory to complete the sweep.

 

The Aces hit their best in the first set, combining to hit .136 with 14 kills. Senior Kerry Sylvester led the way hitting .375 with four kills. Julie Sylvester posted six digs and Kaisi Nixon set six balls to lead the team.

 

Ginta Gabruseva paced the offense in the second set with four of the Aces’ 10 kills in the set. Julie Sylvester had eight digs in the set, and Brooke Maher added six to lead the Aces’ defensively.

 

The Aces never recovered from an 0-7 deficit in the third set as the Bulldogs went on to win. Rachel Robinson was the leader with two kills in the set.

 

Overall, Gabruseva led the team with six kills and six digs. Kulupka and Emily Wandersee had five kills each in the match. Kincaid and Nixon both posted 12 assists and Julie Sylvester had a solid night in the back row with 22 digs.

 

The Aces will host the Creighton Bluejays tomorrow night at Carson Center for the final home game of the regular season. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
