Balanced scoring and 16 steals added up to the University of Evansville's second straight win Tuesday night as the Aces defeated Division II Oakland City University, 75-51. UE is 2-0 for the first time since 2004, and for only the second time since 1999.
"Coach says turn opportunities into accomplishments, and we've done that twice now," said senior guard Jason Holsinger, who scored 10 points to become one of four players in double figures. Leading the way was freshman forward James Haarsma, who followed up a nine-point effort Saturday against Austin Peay with 13 points Tuesday on six-for-nine shooting. The 6-7 Haarsma also pulled down seven rebounds, second only to Nate Garner's eight.
"I just try to attack the boards and play as hard as I can," Haarsma said. "In our offense, everyone gets opportunities."
Oakland City trailed by only five points early in the second half at 33-28 before Evansville went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. Senior Shy Ely and freshman Kaylon Williams scored 12 points each, and sophomore center Pieter van Tongeren added nine. The Aces forced the Mighty Oaks into 24 turnovers, and outscored OCU 16-0 in fast break points. Garner made a career-high five steals, and Williams added four.
"James and Kaylon provide a lot of energy," Holsinger said about his younger teammates. "That gives everybody else energy because they really provide our team a lift."
The Aces will try to improve to 3-0 Saturday when they host Buffalo at 7:05. Evansville lost on the road to the Bulls last season 81-60.
