TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—The University of Evansville secured a spot in the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference tournament with a three-set sweep over the Indiana State Sycamores at ISU Arena on Friday night. Illinois State’s win over Southern Illinois eliminated the Salukis chances at making the tournament.
The Aces improved to 14-16 on the season with an 8-9 slate in the MVC. The Sycamores fell to 8-22 overall and 2-15 in the conference. The Aces combined for 42 kills in the match and hit .214 while holding the Sycamores to a .082 efficiency. The Aces hit .326 in the final set to win the match 27-25, 25-17, and 25-19.
Senior
Sally Kulupka led the way for the Aces, hitting .310 with a match-high 12 kills, five digs, and two block assists.
Emily Wandersee also had 12 kills while
Kerry Sylvester and
Brooke Maher had six each. Freshman
Ellen Sawin returned to the lineup and posted 38 assists while putting up two solo blocks in the match. On defense,
Julie Sylvester posted yet another match with 20 or more digs with 21 in the match while also tallying two service aces.
The Aces will wrap up the regular season as they travel to Bloomington, Ill. to face the Illinois State Redbirds in a battle for the fifth seed. Match-time is set for 7 p.m.
