Redbirds Pick Up Fifth Seed With Win Over Aces

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—The University of Evansville volleyball team lost its final match of the regular season 3-1 to the Illinois State Redbirds on Saturday night at Redbird Arena.
 
With the win the Redbirds locked up the fifth seed in the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Tournament while the Aces will be seeded sixth.
 
The Redbirds outhit the Aces .236 to .170 even though they committed 25 errors compared to the Aces’ 23. The Aces made it close winning the second set and pushing the third set past the 25-point mark, but the Redbirds pulled out the win 25-18, 20-25, 26-24, and 25-16.
 
Junior Ginta Gabruseva paced the Aces’ offense hitting .324 with 15 kills, six digs and three service aces. Emily Wandersee finished the game with nine kills, while Sally Kulupka added eight and sophomore Viera Rajcan had seven. Ellen Sawin posted 39 assists in the match and had a solo block. Julie Sylvester led the Aces’ defense with a match-high 23 digs in the match.
 
The Aces finished the regular season at 14-17 overall with an 8-10 slate in the MVC. The Aces will face the number three seed, Northern Iowa, at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. The winner will face the number two seed, Creighton, in the second round.
