Ellen Sawin (New Lenox, Ill. / Lincoln-Way Central) and
Emily Wandersee (St. Peters, Mo. / Duchesne) received recognition from the Missouri Valley Conference for their efforts in the Aces’ success this season. Sawin was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team while Wandersee made the All-Conference second team.
Sawin is the first UE player to make the All-Freshman team since 2003. Playing on the right side, she leads the team averaging 7.58 assists per set and 9.90 assists per set in conference play. Earlier this season, Sawin was named the MVC Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week for her efforts in the Aces’ win over Northern Iowa. This past weekend, posted three solo blocks and extended her streak to 12 matches with double-digit assists. She now has nine matches with 30 or more assists.
In her second season in the Aces’ front row, Wandersee has the second-best hitting percentage on the team and is third on the team averaging 2.32 kills per set. She is the best blocker on the team, averaging .68 blocks per set and has 12 solo blocks this season. Eight of her blocks have come in conference games where she averages .73 blocks per set to lead the team. She is also in the league’s top-20 in points, accumulating 2.91 points per set. Wandersee tallied eight Valley matches with double-digit kills, and registered a season-high nine total blocks in Evansville’s win over Missouri State.
The Aces will face Northern Iowa in the opening game of the State Farm MVC Tournament at 6 p.m. today.
