EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Freshman outfielder
Greg Wallace ignited the Evansville offense Sunday with seven hits and six RBI, and junior right-hander
John Foley recorded a save and a victory on the mound, as the Purple Aces swept a doubleheader from visiting Chicago State University by scores of 8-3 and 15-6 at UE’s Charles H. Braun Stadium.
Wallace led a UE attack which pounded out 23 runs on 30 base hits in the two games against Chicago State pitching by going 7-for-9 in the doubleheader with two doubles, three runs scored, and six RBI. Foley, meanwhile, tossed 2.2 perfect innings of relief work in aid of starter
Wade Kapteyn (1-3) in UE’s game one victory, before scattering four runs (two earned) on five base hits in 5.0 innings of work in UE’s game two win.
“In a four-game series, the offense usually needs to rise to the occasion in games three and four, and it certainly did today,” said UE head coach
David Seifert. “Every single player who started in today’s doubleheader picked up at least two hits on the afternoon, and
Greg Wallace did a great job of really anchoring the attack today with seven hits in the middle of the batting order.
“On the mound,
John Foley was obviously a huge key to our success. He really gives his all for us when he is on the mound, and he did a great job of giving us two quality outings out there today.”
Chicago State struck first in the opener for two runs in the first inning against Kapteyn, before he would settle down to give up just three runs (two earned) on four singles and two walks, while striking out five men in 4.1 innings of work. Evansville would give Kapteyn the lead for good in the second inning with a trio of runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off of the bat of junior shortstop
Peter Tountas, his third of the year.
UE would tack on a fourth run in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead, before the Cougars would trim the lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning on a one-out single and two-base error to put the potential tying run at third base. Foley would relieve Kapteyn though and strike out the next two batters he faced to get out of the jam. The UE offense would then score a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to provide the final margin of victory, 8-3.
In the nightcap, Evansville used an eight-run fifth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and cruise to a 15-6 victory. The Purple Aces sent 14 men to the plate in the eight-run fifth inning, with all nine Purple Aces reaching base safely in the frame. Freshman catcher #T.J. Dailey# and Wallace both had two-run singles in the frame, which also included an RBI double by Tountas and an RBI triple by junior designated hitter
Derek Melton.
Wallace would then add a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning off of the left-center field wall to cap UE’s scoring and help the Purple Aces win their third game in a row.
Wallace went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the opener, while Melton and freshmen
Nate Smith and
Sean Loggins had two-hit afternoons as well. In the nightcap, Wallace and junior infielder
Andy Smith both had four-hit efforts, while Tountas, Dailey, and freshman second baseman
Brian Robinson all had two hits apiece. Freshman infielder Michael Carpen paced Chicago State in the twinbill by going 5-for-7 in the two games, with two runs scored in each game.
With the doubleheader sweep, Evansville improves to 13-35 on the season. Chicago State, meanwhile, falls to 7-41. The Purple Aces will return to action next on Wednesday night, as UE will travel to Clarksville, Tennessee to battle the Governors of Austin Peay. First-pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. central time and Wednesday’s game can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
