Elenio Makes MLS Debut

6/17/2008 8:41:09 AM

You can add Cory Elenio to the list of former University of Evansville soccer players with Major League Soccer experience in 2008. Elenio made his MLS debut last night in the Columbus Crew's 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,385 at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. Elenio entered in the 81st minute and played in the midfield for the final nine minutes. Elenio joins former Purple Aces Marc Burch of DC United and the Chicago Fire's Diego Gutierrez in MLS uniforms this season. Burch played a major role in DC's 4-1 victory Saturday over the New York Red Bulls. "Cory called late last night following the game," according to UE head coach Mike Jacobs, "and referenced that he was able to get a couple of crosses in and was able to help kill off the game by keeping possession and bringing the ball down to the corner flag. It was great to see Cory and his teammates beat the same Kansas City team that we played two years ago, especially since the Wizards' team this season includes a number of the same key players that we played against." Evansville tied the Wizards 2-2 in their friendly on April 2, 2007 at Overland Park, Kan. Elenio scored the second Evansville goal that night. Elenio's MLS debut coincidentally came on the day that he was chosen as recipient of the William V. Slyker Award, presented annually to the most outstanding male athlete at the University of Evansville. Elenio was chosen for the second year in a row as a first team all-Midwest Region player after leading the Aces in 2007 with seven goals and nine assists for 23 points. He was also a first team all-Missouri Valley Conference forward for the second consecutive year. Elenio is the first Evansville soccer player to earn back-to-back first team all-region honors since goalkeeper Trey Harrington in 1991 and 1992. Elenio ranked second in the MVC in assists (9), third in total points (23) and fifth in goals (7) during his senior year. He ranks 18th all-time in UE career scoring with 18 goals and 19 assists for 55 points.
