For the third consecutive year, a University of Evansville student-athlete has been chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America as a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
Matt Hunsaker, a rising senior from Henderson, Ky., received the honor today. Hunsaker follows former teammate Chris Bouchard, who earned the same award in both 2006 and 2007. Hunsaker is one of 96 golfers at the NCAA Division I level to earn the academic award, which is the highest given by the GCAA. Those eligible at the NCAA Division I level must be a junior or senior, with a stroke average of less than 76 and a grade point average of at least 3.2.
Hunsaker was Evansville’s number one player last season with a 74.3 average. He had three top 10 finishes in his junior year, including sixth place in a field of 88 at the adidas/Hoosier Invitational at Bloomington in which he shot rounds of 75 and 70. Hunsaker has a 3.89 GPA going into his senior year. He is on target to graduate next May with a degree in accounting.
“Matt epitomizes the kind of student-athlete we want as part of our golf program,” said head coach Jim Hamilton. “He's worked hard to become a very good golfer, and he has always been an outstanding student.”
Hunsaker and his teammates open the 2008-09 season Sept. 15 at the University of Kansas Invitational.
