Aces Drop First Match At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Evansville volleyball team dropped its first match of the season with a 3-1 loss to host IUPUI in the opening game of the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational on Saturday night.
 
Evansville held IUPUI to a close match with a 23-25 loss in the first set. IUPUI picked up 39 of its 110 digs in the first set alone.
 
The Aces rallied back for a 25-21 win in the second set with a .275 attack percentage. After the Jaguars jumped out to a 10-7 lead, the Aces came back for 11 of the next 15 points to take the lead.
 
The Aces lost steam after the intermission and the Jaguars were able to put them away with 25-16 and 25-21 wins in the last two sets.
 
Senior Kerry Sylvester led the Aces, hitting .269 with nine kills. Sophomore Emily Wandersee picked up eight kills for the Aces while hitting .250. Defensively, Julie Sylvester and Brooke Maher had 22 digs each.
 
“We made a lot of errors tonight,” said head coach Mike Swan. “We need to regroup and play like we are capable of playing tomorrow.”
 
The Aces will resume the tournament with a 9 a.m. match against Tulsa and a 3:30 match with Jacksonville State.
