University of Evansville baseball players
Peter Tountas,
Tom Freeman and #J.R. Carbonell# have helped the Owensboro Oilers to the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League Tournament title. The Oilers clinched the title and completed a perfect 5-0 run through the post-season thanks to an 11-1 victory over the Tradewater Pirates in the championship game.
Tountas and Freeman helped anchor the Oilers’ offensive attack through the post-season, especially during an outstanding championship round. In the first game of a best-of-three final round against Tradewater, both Tountas and Freeman had two-hit efforts and drove in a run in the Oilers’ 9-4 victory. In the title-clinching game against the Pirates, Freeman helped kick-start a four-run first inning outburst with a solo home run.
Tountas entered the championship final hitting .375 with a pair of doubles in Owensboro’s four post-season games, while Freeman carried a post-season batting average of .308 into the championship game. Official statistics for the championship game are currently unavailable.
While Carbonell did not pitch in the playoff run, he did help the Oilers down the stretch in the regular season, as he went 2-0 with a save and a perfect 0.00 ERA on the mound. In 13.0 innings of work, Carbonell struck out 17 men, while yielding just five walks and four singles.
UE sophomore infielder
Shawn Kuester also contributed to the Oilers’ cause during the season, playing in 11 games in June, posting a .286 batting average with a pair of doubles.
