THE TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW...UE VS. NORTHERN IOWA JAN. 13

Northern Iowa (10-6, 4-1) has already won at Southern Illinois and Creighton, but the Purple Aces will try to make sure Evansville (11-4, 3-2) doesn't get added to the list Tuesday night when first place UNI takes on the Aces at Roberts Stadium. Tip-off is at 7:05.

1. Evansville leads the series against Northern Iowa 17-15, but the Aces have lost seven in a row to the Panthers. That is UE’s longest losing streak against an MVC team. The most recent Evansville victory came Jan. 7, 2005 at Roberts Stadium, 92-73.

2. Northern Iowa has won four in a row to move into a first place tie in the Valley with Bradley and Drake at 4-1. The Panthers’ starting five all score between 9.9 and 11.4 points per game. UNI was picked sixth in the pre-season poll. Evansville was picked eighth.

3. Northern Iowa is 2-0 on the road against MVC teams, and the victories came at traditionally two of the toughest places to win–Southern Illinois and Creighton. The Panthers have won three years in a row at Evansville.

4. Northern Iowa has the best shooting percentage in the Missouri Valley Conference at 46.9 percent. Evansville has the second best defensive numbers in the league, allowing opponents to shoot only 41.3 percent.

5. UE starters Kaylon Williams and Nate Garner grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, just an hour from the UNI campus at Cedar Falls.

6. Evansville is 10-0 at home for the first time since the 1999-2000 team won its first 10 at Roberts Stadium. The last time UE won its first 11 home games was 1988-89, when the Aces won all 15 at Roberts on their way to reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

7. Evansville’s 11-4 record is its best after 15 games since the 1999-2000 season. At this time last season, the Aces were 5-10 and 0-5 in the Valley.

8. Senior Jason Holsinger goes into Tuesday’s game with 1,254 points. Holsinger is also the UE career leader in three-point field goals with 153. He needs 11 points to catch his head coach, Marty Simmons, who scored 1,265 points in his UE career. Of course, Simmons’ total came in just two years after he transferred from Indiana University in 1985.

9. Shy Ely climbed back into the MVC scoring lead with his game-high 22 points at Southern Illinois on Saturday. Ely is averaging 17.5 for the season. He’s been held out of double figures just once (9 in last Wednesday’s overtime win against Missouri State). Ely is now 32nd in UE scoring with 1,099 points. He needs two points to catch #31 Reed Jackson, and eight to match #30 Theren Bullock.

10. Here’s a look at UE’s top-5 ranked players in MVC stat categories going into Tuesday’s game: Scoring: 1. Shy Ely (17.5); Assists: 2. Kaylon Williams (4.5); Minutes Played: 2. Shy Ely (34.1); Assist-To-Turnover Ratio: 3. Kaylon Williams (2.0); Offensive Rebounds: 4. Nate Garner 2.7; Steals: 5. Kaylon Williams (1.7).
