THE TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW...UE VS. INDIANA STATE JAN. 17
1. This is the first re-match of the season for Evansville. Down by 14 late in the first half and by 12 early in the second, the Aces scrambled back to beat the Sycamores 65-59 at Terre Haute on January 4.
Shy Ely scored 20 of his 24 in the second half and
Nate Garner scored 16 of his career-high 21 in the second half. The win ended a 16-game losing streak to Missouri Valley Conference teams away from Roberts Stadium.
2. Saturday’s game will be the 149th in a series that Indiana State leads 75-73. Evansville has played 34 more games against Indiana State than any other school (the UE-Butler series is next with 114). The series dates back to 1920-21. Evansville has won four of the last five against Indiana State, including three of the last four at Roberts Stadium.
3. Fans are encouraged to bring new or used children’s shoes to Saturday’s game to support Samaritan's Feet, a relief organization that provides shoes for impoverished children around the world. IUPUI coach Ron Hunter brought national recognition to the program last January when he coached a game in his bare feet. This weekend’s collegiate games are a major focus of this year’s effort to raise money and shoes for the organization. The UE women begin Saturday’s doubleheader with a 4:00 game against Creighton.
4. Indiana State scoring leader Harry Marshall (#6 in MVC at 14.0 ppg) is questionable for Saturday’s game after suffering a hamstring injury Jan. 10 against Illinois State. He did not play in Tuesday’s 63-52 loss to Bradley. Marshall led the Sycamores with 16 points in the Jan. 4 loss to the Aces.
5. The Aces scored 70 points or more in seven consecutive games from Dec. 2 through Dec. 28, but since then they’ve been held to 50, 65, 66, 63 and 47 points. Drake is the only MVC opponent that Evansville has scored 70 or more against (76-65 UE?win on Dec. 28).
6. Despite losing two in a row, the 11-5 Aces still have their best 16-game record since the 1999-2000 season. At this time last season, the Aces were 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the Valley.
7. A victory Saturday would put the Aces at 4-3 in the MVC. The last time UE was above .500 in the league seven games into MVC play was the 1999-2000 season.
8. UE players in MVC’s top five this week: Shy Ely is second in minutes played (34.2), second in scoring (16.9) and fifth in rebounds (6.4).
Kaylon Williams is second in assists (4.6), third in steals (1.8) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). Nate Garner is fourth in offensive rebounds (2.6), and tied with Ely for fifth in total rebounds (6.4).
9. Two freshmen were among UE’s top three scorers in Tuesday’s loss to Northern Iowa.
Denver Holmes scored a career-high 11 points in 18 minutes.
Kaylon Williams also scored 11, one shy of his career high.
10. Evansville’s 10-0 start at home this season tied for fourth best in UE’s 32-year Division I history. The three teams with better starts all reached post-season play–NCAA for the 1988-89 team, NIT for the 1987-88 squad, and NCAA for the 1981-82 team.
